I’m feeling kind of sad about the state of modern online journalism. The late, great Gawker is undead. Buzzfeed continues to cut its news staff. Ugh. Everything sucks.
And, yet, there is a space in the media universe that isn’t being served — Generation Tik-Tok. So, what I would do is start a blog that was a fusion of Buzzfeed, the old Gawker and a site obsessed with Tik-Tok. You generate buzz by really taking seriously the pop culture that Tik-Tok generates on a near moment by moment basis.
Now, there are obviously some problems with this idea. First of all, blogs are demonstrably dead. So, too, are apps. They’re both mature mediums. As such, it’s difficult to establish a new site or app these days without a lot — and I mean A LOT — of investment.
And, given that the metaverse is just around the corner, it’s simply impossible to get the investment necessary to successfully start something as antiquated and gauche as blog.
Nonetheless, I find the concept of such a blog intriguing. It would be fun to have a pop culture obsessed blog that was good enough that I went out of my way to read it instead of just passively learning about its coverage via Twitter. But, I don’t know — am I just being my usual delusional self to think such a thing is possible?
Probably yes.
And, really, I think what’s going on is I’m old and am being nostalgic for things that made me happy when I was a lot more younger. So, lulz. I suppose the era of both blogs and apps is over.
Now, we just wait for Silicon Valley to get around to rolling out the metaverse.
